Story
I'm taking part in the 2.6 Challenge on 26 April, which would have been the date of the London Marathon if it wasn't for the coronavirus emergency. I'm planning to walk 26,000 steps in a day, which - judging by my usual, much shorter walks - will equate to about thirteen miles or a half-marathon. Of course, I'll continue social distancing; I'm lucky to be in a remote corner of the country where I can walk miles of clifftop paths and heathland without seeing a single person! If necessary, I'll walk around the garden too!
Right now, charities across the UK need us more than ever. Demand for support from many of them is high directly as a result of Covid19 but their traditional funding streams have virtually dried up as charity shops close and fundraising events like the London Marathon are cancelled.
It's hard to pick a charity to support, but the challenges from the virus facing carers and care homes and their heroic work, combined with the anniversary of my gran's death four years ago, has inspired me to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society, which is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, they aim to create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
