3 Million Steps for MS
Fundraising for Multiple Sclerosis Society
Story
MS Together is a support group and community organisation for younger people (aged 18-35) who have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and live in the UK or Ireland. Since 2020, we've set ourselves 1 big fundraising challenge per year and our Million Steps for MS initiative has raised over £50,000 during this time, so we want to keep it going!
This year, on 29 May 2022, we aim to collectively walk / run / wheel the equivalent of 3 Million Steps by midnight - that’s approximately 1500 miles or 57 marathons 
We will have a team made up of MS Together members (who all have MS) and we will split the steps / miles between us. Each member will be able to choose their own challenge based on their abilities and what they feel they can achieve. They will then be able to take part virtually or at organised meet-ups around the country and they will have the full day to complete their chosen challenge.

For some, they will need to use a wheelchair or a walking aid, for others, walking 5-10 minutes is a challenge and then there are some who are able to walk / run for miles. That’s why this challenge is so perfect - we are able to divide this challenge between members so that everyone feels comfortable. Of course we also know that MS is unpredictable so pledging an amount of steps for a day in the future isn’t easy - but having a team behind you who can complete your remaining steps if you’re having a bad day is what this is all about.
For anyone with MS, staying active can be hard and we know that for many of our members, this challenge will not be easy but one of our aims is to empower our members and remind them that they can still achieve amazing things. MS Together is ready for this challenge because together, we are stronger!
Please support our team in raising money for the MS Society. Since we last fundraised for them, here are just some of the advances they have made:
- Zebrafish study showed cells that survive myelin damage are worse at producing myelin.
- Researchers discovered changing a single gene can boost myelin repair in older mice.
- The first person joined ChariotMS - a new clinical trial focusing on advanced MS.
- The MS Society introduced Octopus - the world's first multi-arm, multi-stage trial for MS.
- New research has identified which type of nerve cells are lost in MS.
- The results from a phase 2a clinical trial showed bexarotene is capable of regenerating lost myelin.
- New research suggests the diabetes drug pioglitazone could be another piece in the puzzle of stopping MS.
And so much more! The MS Society is a wonderful charity that has supported many of us individually and as a group. We now want to give back in any way we can. We understand times are tough right now, but any donations - big or small - will go such a long way.
