At Young Lives vs Cancer, we help families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. But every day 12 more children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer. We’ll face it all together – but we can’t do it without you. Visit www.younglivesvscancer.org.uk

Story

In May 2022 at the age of 23, Laura was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin Lymphoma in her neck, chest and bone. After first noticing a lump in her neck in December 2021, Laura initially dismissed it as a swollen gland and shrugged it off.

Over the next few months, she noticed more lumps and rashes appearing around her neck and chest and became increasingly tired. After her diagnosis, Laura was put in contact with the charity “Young Lives vs Cancer” to help her through her diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Young Lives vs Cancer is a charity that helps children, young people (0-25), and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them.

Laura has expressed how amazing this charity has been for supporting her and her family. As well as providing support and counselling, they have helped with finances and removed the burden of sorting all non-medical issues, relieving a lot of the stress for her and her family. In addition to this, the charity has organised the procurement of her wig through the Little Princess Trust and call to check in with her on a regular basis.

With a recovery plan in place, Laura began chemotherapy on 27th May and has emphasised how important Young Lives Vs Cancer has been with helping her up until this stage. We have decided to take part in the 10k Tough Mudder London South on 25th September in order to raise money for this charity that has been so supportive for our best friend.

The Tough Mudder is a 10km course with 20 obstacles which will be sure to challenge us physically and mentally by pushing us out of our comfort zone. An example of just a few of the obstacles we will be facing are:

Electroshock therapy: A field of wires dangling from a frame with 10,000 volts crackle through them which we will run through and try not to fall.

Cage crawl: A 60' watery trench under a steel fence with only a few inches to breath with the only way to pass being pulling ourselves through.

Mud mile: Truckloads of deep, wet, sloppy mud carefully sculpted into rolling mounds. With deeper trenches and higher hills for you and your team to scramble over, there is no way we’re getting out clean.

Here's a short message from Laura:
At 23 I did not expect this to happen and if it can happen to me it can also happen to you.
Don’t ignore your symptoms. Push the doctors. And get yourself seen because as much as you don’t think it can be you … it can.

Please donate so that we can aid Young Lives vs Cancer in helping many more young people and families through similar challenges that Laura has experienced – any amount would go a long way.
