Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Little did we know when we started high school 23 years ago, that the best friends we made then would still be our best friends today.
Like all friends, we've been through a lot together. We've fallen out and we've made up. We've been through boyfriends, husband's, childbirth and parenthood. We've been there for each other through the good and the bad. And we've been there for each other through cancer.
When Becky became ill during her last year at Uni, the last thing we expected it to be was cancer. As she underwent chemo we watched as she suffered the side effects. Whilst seeing her lose her hair was hard, listening to her talk of how she couldn't sleep because every bone in her body ached was harder. We rallied round and did the best we could to support her, knowing little about life at 21, let alone cancer.
At the beginning of this year, after an abnormal smear result, Laura was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Once again the girls rallied round, bringing wine and takeaways, and mopping up her wee when her catheter leaked 🤣 (life is a little different at 34 compared to when you're 21)
But cancer is a lonely place. Especially in the middle of the night when you're lying awake, unable to sleep, petrified about the path in front.
For Laura, Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust got her through most of those nights. It allowed her to speak to other women going through the same thing and it helped prepare her for what to expect. She'd have been lost without its support and guidance.
So, in May next year, we are ditching the school run, leaving the men in charge of the children, and travelling to Croatia to ride 300km over 3 days for a charity called Women v Cancer.
This is a crazy distance folks, and those of you that know us, know that you are more likely to find us at a bar than on a bike. 5 out of the 6 of us have actually had to go out and buy a bike as we don't even own one (I'm sure I don't need to highlight that it's Tash who is the only one of us to own a bike, and the only one of us in any sort of shape at the moment to take on this challenge). It will involve months of training and once we are out there we will be cycling from 7 in the morning until 5 in the evening 😬
The charity supports Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, Breast Cancer Care and Ovarian Cancer Action, all of which are important to us and our families.
We grew up with the Spice Girls, when Girl Power was all the rage. Because of Women v Cancer this has a new meaning to us:
G - giving back to charities
I - improving awareness
R - riding for our lives, and the lives of loved ones we have lost
L - leaning on the support of friends
POWER - to make a difference
Our sole aim is to raise as much money as possible for these charities that provide vital support to those going through cancer, as well as promoting and celebrating the importance of friendship.
So please help us by digging deep, supporting our fundraising events (details to follow) and not laughing at us
Much love xxx
