Story
Assalaamu'alaikum
The Muslim Youth Network is supporting StudentsForSyria in raising money for Segarona Kebarona - a special needs centre for Syrian children displaced by war. The centre focuses on treating trauma suffered as a result of the war.
The war in Syria has raged for nine long years. Many of the children we seek to support are children of war, born into it and who know nothing but conflict. The result is a generation of young people suffering from various trauma conditions.
The Segarona Kebarona Centre aims to provide 200 children with psycho-social support and educational support through 1-2-1 therapy sessions delivered by specialists doctors and therapists.
Doctor - £1500 a month x 6 months = £9,000
Councillor - £600 a month x 6 months = £3,600
Rent for 6 months for the premises = £6,000
The emotional wellbeing of children is just as important as their physical health. Good mental health allows children and young people to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-rounded, healthy adults.
One of the most widespread issues facing these children is Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD can follow physical or sexual abuse, witnessing something extremely frightening or traumatising, being the victim of violence or severe bullying or surviving a disaster.
Some of the treatment will include the following:
- Cognitive-behavioural therapy is very effective for people who develop PTSD. This type of therapy teaches ways to replace negative, unhelpful thoughts and feelings with more positive thinking. Behavioural strategies can be used at a child's own pace to help desensitize the child to the traumatic parts of what happened so he or she doesn't feel so afraid of them.
- Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) combines cognitive therapy with directed eye movements. This has been shown to be effective in treating people of all ages with PTSD.
- Play therapy is used to treat young children with PTSD who can't directly deal with the trauma.
