In memory of Scott Pace

Sheena Odell is raising money for The Myton Hospices
In memory of Scott Pace
We support thousands of people living with terminal illnesses & their families, in our three hospices, via our patient & family support services, and in the community through Myton at Home. We need to raise £12.7 million this year to provide our services free of charge – we can’t do it without you!

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

We wanted to contribute to Myton Hospice in Coventry in recognition of the care they provided to our son, Scott over the Christmas and New year period 23/24.

Scott suffered from back pain in August 2023, and had several blood tests and after attending an ultrasound scan and an MRI scan he developed jaundice. He was admitted in to hospital on Wednesday 1st November 2023 thinking he had gallstones.  After a procedure was carried out on his liver to remove bilirubin and biopsies taken, a CT Scan was carried out on Sunday 5th November and further tests showed that he had adenocarcinoma of the colon which had then spread to his liver and lungs (stage 4 cancer).  Scott had had no other symptoms that we know of prior to the back pain a few months earlier.

We were told by the consultant that they had to get Scott’s liver functioning before attempting to treat anything else.  He couldn’t have chemotherapy or radiotherapy until the bilirubin levels in his blood had gone down, as this could kill him.  Several procedures were carried out over the next month and a half, to allow his liver to function but the cancer in his liver had mutated to an aggressive form called B-RAF - It was then we found out there was nothing more that could be done but to make him comfortable and we only had a few weeks months at best.

Scott was admitted to Myton Hospice on Saturday 23rd Dec 2023, where we spent Christmas Day.  We made roast duck and all the trimmings, taking Christmas to him at the hospice.  They provided us with the table and vegetables.  We had the best day we could have had under the circumstances, it wasn’t possible for Scott to come home which would have been even better.

Scott’s energy declined over the next few days, although he kept insisting on doing things himself.  He slept more each day and would have energy bursts.  He had his brother’s laptop so was still able to do a little online gaming for a while, but started to drop off in the middle of a game.

Friends and family visited when they could, chatting to him about things they had done since last seeing him.  He liked to go out in a wheelchair around the gardens.

We managed to take him home for a few hours on New Year’s Eve, but he was unwell and we had to take him back to the hospice at 1:30am on News years day, where he was very quickly made comfortable and slept for the rest of the evening.  We both stayed there with him that night.

As the rest of the week went on Scott had visits from members of his family. Sleep seemed to take up most of  his time.  He decline rapidly over the next few days and pass away with myself, his father and brother by his side on Sunday 7th January.
