Slim with Em's Olympic Triathlon Team · 18 July 2020 ·
I joined Bucklebury Slimming World group on its opening meeting, just over a year ago. Whilst I anticipated that it would provide me with the tools to lose weight through altering my diet, I didn't expect it to completely overhaul my lifestyle and mindset. To date, I have lost almost 3 stone, with a little more to go! I have been incredibly lucky in the support I have received from Em, my brilliant consultant, and the wonderful members of the group. Indeed, it was the collected energies of Em and other members which gave me the confidence to go out and buy some trainers and download a running app.
So, twelve months on from my joining the group, I am participating in two-thirds of an Olympic Triathlon; a 1.5k open water swim and a 10k run in aid of Diabetes UK. Prior to Lockdown, I didn't run. In fact, I struggle to think of a time, since the days of enforced cross-country at school, when I ran any distance. To date, my longest run has been about 8.5k and longest open water swim 1.25k so going the extra distances consecutively is going to be challenging. Facing the now notorious ‘Briff Lane Climb’ just over half way through the run is going to be tough. The swim scares me the most though - the lake is all reedy and fishy and Eleanor tells me there may be piranhas lurking!
In all seriousness, this is a huge physical and mental challenge for me - I’ve never done anything like this before and I am pretty apprehensive! I have been very lucky in my journey so far to an all round healthier lifestyle and it seems an apt way to show my appreciation by trying to raise a nice sum for Diabetes UK, which supports people to the same end. It will be what keeps me going!
The basic premise of our fundraiser is that Em, her partner Freddie and Slimming World Target Member friend Rachel, will be completing an Olympic Triathlon around the area of Em's Slimming World groups (West Berkshire). I will be joining them for the 1.5km open water swim and later the 10km run, whilst they will also cycle 40km between the two events. Maybe one day I might be able to manage the whole thing!
Thank you very much for reading and for all your support. : )
