We rescue and care for child slaves to permanently end child slavery in Nepal

Story

Climb 29029 feet over 224 miles. Hill running in the Yorkshire Dales.  Starting on World Fair Trade day 9th May 2020.

We are attempting to climb the height of Everest and run off-road the distance from Kathmandu to the summit to raise money for Child Rescue Nepal and the fight against the Corona virus.

Namaste, our family business has supported Child Rescue Nepal for almost 20 years. Recently, we had a Zoom session with their CEO Jo Bega and several supporters and trustees from the charity to get an update on the situation in Nepal in relation to COVID-19.  The situation is currently stable due to the lockdown imposed by the government but the potential for the virus to cause great suffering in Nepal is, unfortunately, enormous. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the
world and they run the risk of being disproportionately affected by the
virus due to a number of factors as explained in the link in the article below.

Jo explained that one of the pressing issues for Nepal is readily available water to wash hands.  Water tanks are desperately needed right now in communities and ready access to water plays an important role in combatting COVID-19. Child Rescue Nepal has been asked to install water tanks in some of the major junctions in Makwanpur.  Hundreds of people will directly benefit from these water tanks both now and in the difficult months ahead.

The water tanks cost a total of £480 to install, and they have had a request for five, giving a target of £2400.

A country as poor as Nepal cannot continue in lockdown for the long term and the availability of water will pay a vital role in people being able to wash their hands as they move from one area to another and will have a direct impact on controlling the spread of the virus.

Our son, Oliver aged 12, took part in the Zoom session and, inspired by Jo’s brilliant feat of raising money for the charity by running the vertical height of Everest on her own stairs, thought of his own idea to raise money to fund the water tanks.

He is a keen fell runner and we are very fortunate in that the Yorkshire Dales National Park starts at the end of our street.   We can therefore, during lockdown, run in isolation over the moors and fells while meeting no-one or the occasional walker whom we can  pass with a very wide margin.

Oliver's idea has set himself and his Dad quite a challenge!

We will attempt to run the vertical height of Everest, (29029 feet) plus the distance from Kathmandu to Mount Everest (around 224 miles by road and path) by doing a daily run, starting on World Fair Trade Day, 9th May.   We will keep you updated on our progress on the Namaste Facebook page.  Our support team include younger brother, Mum and Kip the dog.  We don't know how long it will take and need to be careful not to overstress young joints and avoid injury but there are plenty of hills and much to run for!

If you are able to make a donation to support our challenge it will help us get up those hills and conquer Everest!
