Story

Events for Namuwongo is continuing to support the Namuwongo community in Kampala, Uganda through some incredible work from the Montgomery Group. More on this at the end but here’s how painful things are over there…

1. Firstly, any family, where a member of that family is suspected of having symptoms, must self-isolate. HOWEVER, these families, who already have nothing, who literally live ‘hand to mouth’, receive absolutely no government support to ease the pain of their isolation. Isolation means no money, no food…

2. Later on, under pressure, the government announced that it would provide 5kgs of rice and beans to those families affected by Covid-19. Families were selected for the support and a family member went to the collection point to pick up their 5kg bag of food. On returning to their houses, they found that much of the bag’s weight was made up of nails and stones!

3. Now, with restrictions being eased, those in the community are being told that the wearing of masks is mandatory. The penalty for breaching this requirement is a cool 6 months in prison! Washable masks cost £1 each. £1 is a LOT of money to anyone in Namuwongo, of course, more so if there is a family to provide for. It creates a choice between buying a mask or eating!

4. Events for Namuwongo is keen to see if others will join Montgomery in helping the community at this time. Would you believe that just £57 provides a care package for one family (of on average 6 individuals) for a whole month! The package includes rice, maize flour, beans, salt, cooking oil, fuel, soap and feminine products.

Events for Namuwongo (E4N) are partnering with East African Playgrounds to deliver support directly to the Namuwongo community in Kampala, Uganda.  Money will be used to provide direct support through the Covid19 crisis, and to help stimulate recovery afterwards.
