Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide exists to meet the needs and break the isolation of those impacted by a suicide loss. We provide a safe and confidential environment in which bereaved people can share their experiences and feelings, so that no one bereaved by suicide has to face their loss alone.

Story

In April 2024, Ben and I will be running the London Landmarks Half Marathon for a special cause. Thank you so much in advance for donating whatever you can, it really will make a massive difference.

Ben and I are aiming to raise some money for Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide, who are the only UK-based organisation offering peer-led support to adults impacted by suicide loss. They help individuals support each other, at the time of their loss and in the months and years that follow. They aim to provide safe, confidential environments where people can share their experiences and feelings, giving and gaining support from each other.

Within the veterinary profession, suicide is at an all time high and having a huge impact on our profession. Veterinary surgeons in the UK are three to four times more likely than the general population to die by suicide. Additionally, a study funded by pet food brand Royal Canin showed nearly 70% of veterinarians have had a colleague or peer die by suicide, and close to 60% have experienced work-related stress, anxiety or depression so severe it required professional help. This is a HUGE number of vets and colleagues affected by the loss of someone by suicide!! The effect of a suicide on families, friends and colleagues can be devastating. Every suicide is a tragedy, and for many people bereaved by suicide, the impact is long lasting.

I have personally been affected by the loss of a friend to suicide, you are left asking yourself questions. When we lose someone to suicide, we may feel guilty that we didn't realise how much they were struggling. You may spend a lot of time thinking about things you could have said or done differently.

Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide is hugely helping those left behind, providing a safe supportive environment for them to meet and privately speak to others who have also lost a friend or family member to suicide.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
