Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In May 2017 I will be joining a great group of people aiming to raise funds to support the Myeloma UK. This organization supports patients suffering from this devastating disease to live longer and have a better quality of life. This is done by accelerating the discovery and development and access to new treatments, while helping patients and their families cope with everything a diagnosis of myeloma brings.
In myeloma, plasma cells (a type of white blood cell which is made in the bone marrow, the ‘spongy’ material found in the centre of the larger bones) become abnormal, multiply uncontrollably and release only one type of antibody known as paraprotein, which has no useful function. Plasma cells form part of your immune system. Normal plasma cells produce antibodies, also called immunoglobulins, to help fight infection. It is often through the measurement of this paraprotein that myeloma is diagnosed and monitored.
Working in the healthcare industry I see all the efforts of companies and organizations to find ways to improve patients’ lives. As a way to contribute I’ll be joining the Myeloma Charity Bike Ride and riding 500km in 4 days, from London to Paris. On top, I’ll be taking this as a personal challenge, boosting my health and enjoying a memorable time with the group.
