Story
My mum Lorelle died last year and I miss her so much it hurts. But now the shock of her death has lifted and I'm ready to get on with my life and reclaim.
This includes raising money for MNDAWA.
Mum's journey with MND was brief but gutsy.
About 12 months before diagnosis she was finding it hard to use her hands and her walking slowed. Her voice also developed a laryngitis type quality. When she choked on food christmas day 2018 my blood ran cold as I knew this was not good.
3 weeks later she was diagnosed with MND - in simple terms, a muscle wasting disease. And our harrowing journey had begun. My mother who was never majorly sick in her life....who had just retired. My beautiful, selfless, funny, cuddly, mum. Two things the family knew straight away.....it was terminal....and there was no cure. And muscles are used for EVERYTHING!! Walking, talking, eating, swallowing, breathing. I was worried sick and thought of her constantly. MND is not a common disease and hardly anyone knew anything about it - including some DRs!
Her battle was quick and just months later she needed machines to help her breathe. All I could do was lie on the bed with her, my head on her chest as I held her hand. I knew she didn't have long left and my tears were silent. She was diagnosed in January and died in September 2019 aged 68. The MND family journey was tough. Because mum was over 65 there were barely any services to help us. Really the only place of support was MNDAWA. They saved our sanity and spoke to mum as needed in person or over the phone. And times are tough for them.....they are small because MND is so uncommon in WA so resources and help can take time.
Around 170 people at one time in WA have MND.
So I'm going to do what my mum was unable to do at the end of her life.....walk!!!! 135km Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin raising money for MNDAWA so they can help other families in desperate need. Please help me help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA Inc (MND), the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!
