Story

On the 12th February 2022, we lost our Nana Giovanna in the wonderful care of Compton Hospice. In January, Nan sadly experienced a very sudden and life limiting stroke in her sleep. Resulting in complete paralysis on her right side, cognitive and vision impairment, leaving her unable to eat, talk or move independently again. At the grand age of 89, and with expertise advice, we made the heart wrenching decision as a family to withdraw treatment and allow nan to pass peacefully when she was ready. Nan always told us 'God will take me when he is ready', and that he did. For three weeks following the stroke Nan lived on. On her third week end of life she was transferred to Compton Hospice Care. As a family we were so grateful for this opportunity, to allow Nan the peace and dignity she deserved in her last days.

The care and compassion we experienced as a family was exceptional. As a nurse myself, it was extremely difficult feeling so helpless in nan's palliative journey. However, the team at Compton were able to offer such personalised, family centred care, right up until the end. We would often find nurses sat talking to Nan, holding her hand and singing to her. The team would spend their valuable time with us as a family, offering distraction, and endless cups of tea. Nan's faith was always respected, and regular visits from the hospital priest would be arranged. Although our experience with Compton was painful and short lived, it was a special journey. We cannot thank the team enough for making us feel like we mattered, that Nan's life mattered. Prior to being transferred to Compton, Dr's told us Nan did not know who were anymore. However, the Dr's and Nurses at Compton reassured us she very much did. The nurses would say 'she is smiling at you with her eyes,' and she was. We will never forget that.

On the 4th September, my brother Aaron and I will be running the Wolverhampton Half Marathon. We will be doing this is memory of Nan, and in order to raise some money for Compton Care. We are grateful of any donation small or large.

Thank you x
