Rwanda Widows Housing with Aegis Trust · 26 January 2013

Aegis believes that genocide is preventable. Aegis supports survivors, protects those at greatest risk, educates about genocide and holds perpetrators to account.

Story

Winifrida and Liberate are both widows of the Rwandan Genocide who live in homes without drainage or kitchens and bathrooms.  I am raising 5,000 pounds to transform their homes.  With your help we can change their lives forever and let them know that we really care about them.  For the cost of changing one basic kitchen here, together we change their lives.

Please donate today, so that by August of 2013 they can have their homes rennovated.

Here are Liberate's and Winifrida's testimonies:

Liberate MUKASAKINDI-Biography-

Liberate MUKASAKINDI survived the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Before the genocide began she lived with her husband and her five children. She was pregnant with her sixth child at the time.

She and her family hid in different places in the genocide, but five of her children were murdered, including the new baby, which was born in the genocide, killed by a neighbouring Hutu woman.  Her husband was also murdered. She survived with one daughter by hiding for many days in a latrine.

Liberate was raped during the genocide. Today she has cancer in her blood system, and lives alone without basic amenities.

Winifrida MUKAGIHANA

Winifrida Mukagihana lived with her husband and five children before the genocide.

When genocide began, John, Winifrida’s husband, assumed that they were targeting only men and left the family.  Winifrida sent three of her children, to her grandparents, taking the eldest and youngest with her to a convent.  She later discovered that her three children, sister, grandparents and her husband had all perished.  During the genocide Winifrida was hacked by machete by the militia, tied to a tree, raped, and contracted HIV.

Since the end of genocide she had a serious abdominal problems as a result of her injuries.  Winifrida needed medical treatment not available in Rwanda, and so Aegis Rwanda assisted her to travel to India for essential surgery, for which she still needs more treatment and a return to India soon.  Aegis Rwanda also renovated the shell of Winifrida‘s house.  She still needs a kitchen, barthroom and water drainage.

Winifrida is currently responsible for 6 people, including 4 young grandchildren.  She does not have a job, and Eugene, her son, although eager to work, is unable to find a job given his lack of education.
