We're Nat and Gemma, two South East London mums who ran The Vitality Big Half (our first ever half marathon!) on September 4 to raise money for Mammakind, our amazing local baby bank charity. Neither of us are experienced runners at all - so this was a huge challenge for us!

Mammakind is a volunteer-led charity, supporting families with children aged 0-5 years old who are living below the poverty line. Based in Lewisham, they have supported hundreds of families with basic essentials such as cots, high chairs, bedding, nappies, clothes and toys since they set up two years ago. Every week they collect and sort through donations, as well as bulk-buying essentials from supermarkets and arranging donations wherever they can - and all in their spare time on top of looking after their own families! 

Having both volunteered with them, we have seen first hand the amazing work that they do, and the care and dedication put into helping struggling families look after their little ones. It is absolutely heartbreaking to hear some of the stories of children having so little, but Mammakind are doing an incredible job of helping families to keep their heads above water, and have dignity in being able to look after their children. 

They're expecting to receive hundreds more family referrals from Greenwich, Lewisham, Bromley and Bexley over the coming months due to the cost of living crisis, increasing energy bills and soaring inflation. Any money we raise will go directly on essentials for struggling families - and is very much appreciated!
