Nathan Francis £20000 Appeal · 9 November 2012

Ridgeway is a special school for children with physical disabilities and many of the children have associated learning, communication and medical needs. Our children are aged between 3 and 19 years, we are based in Kempston Bedfordshire.

Story

Great news…. The Cancer Fund have agreed to fully fund Nathan’s treatment. We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone for their selfless giving to this appeal. Nathan’s treatment will start in January and we will keep you updated with his progress.

To date the money raised is £17464.85. Legally, we are required to offer donors the opportunity to have a refund on their donation if they wish. If you would like a refund please email joyce.webb@ridgeway.bedssch.co.uk to request this. However, any money not refunded will be donated to charities that have been instrumental to Nathan’s care and well being over the years. The charities chosen are:

Keech Childrens Hospice (www.keech.org.uk), The Indee Rose Trust (www.indeerosetrust.org), Great Ormond Street Hospital (www.gosh.org) and Ridgeway School (www.ridgeway.ik.org).

Once again many thanks for all your support and Seasons Greetings to you all.

Ron and family

Nathan is nine years old and has been attending Great Ormond Street hospital for the majority of his life so much so that in the last few years he has practically lived at the hospital as treatment has been constant. Nathan currently has five brain tumours, as well as his spine is covered in tumours. The tumours are classified as Low Grade Glioma, which have been treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy over the past five years.
Four of the tumours are inactive, however the fifth tumour is new, is actively growing and is wrapped around his optic nerve which could cause Nathan to lose his sight if it was to be operated on. He currently needs to have a chemotherapy medication called Avastin, which is available from the United States, and has a good success rate, as it targets only the tumour. The Bedfordshire Primary Care Trust who is responsible for the payment of this treatment are dragging their feet as to whether they will fund the treatment, as the current cost is £20,000+.
