On the 7th July 2018 I suffered a life threatening brain injury. I was in a coma for 4 weeks, underwent 3 surgeries and was in hospital for a total of 3 months.

Charity organisation Headway (Thames Valley) have partnered with Berkshire healthcare NHS to provide brain injury and recovery courses, one of which I am currently enrolled in. Not only a great group of inspiring participants, but a wonderful group of workers and volunteers supporting us and promoting the awareness of brain injury and recovery.

We may appear like we are okay physically, but there is a lot going on mentally that you cannot see. My brain, the main body system that defines what I do and how I behave, has sustained a massive injury and I have been told it takes 2 years to recover – maybe not even fully. I sometimes can’t smell or taste, I can behave irrationally, my speech can get confused, I get over tired and exhausted quickly and I am burning calories twice as fast as I would do normally and have to eat double the amount – to name just a few of the things that you can suffer from.

Headways are teaching me how to deal with this. They are helping me understand that I am different from what I was before and that, that is okay.

I encourage anyone who is or knows someone that is suffering from any form of brain injury to get in touch with Headways - they understand what you are going through and are there to help.
