Story
Maggie's Newcastle needs to raise £590,000 a year to fund their unique programme of cancer support. This year, the Centre needs to raise an additional £1million to fund a new extension. The Centre hopes to increase the building capacity by 30% to be able to support even more families affected by cancer in the North East and Cumbria.
Five years ago, Maggie’s opened in the grounds of the Freeman Hospital. Every aspect of the space was carefully crafted to be calm and uplifting.
Every month, 1,300 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North East. Maggie’s support has never been more vital to ensure that people can live their life to the full – no matter what their situation.
Around 100 people a day visit Maggie’s Newcastle for support. Maggie’s is for everyone affected by cancer, including family and friends. The in-house team includes 3 cancer support specialists, benefits advisor, counselling psychologist and clinical psychologist.
The team at Maggie’s know cancer can be life-changing and can affect so many areas of your life, not just your health. Their unique approach helps people feel more in control and less isolated with drop-in advice and an ever-growing programme of support groups, relaxation activities and exercise.
Since 2013, almost 100,000 visits have been made and over £8million has been secured in financial aid for people living with cancer in the North East. Everything at Maggie’s is funded by the local community, with the Centre receiving no government funding.
As part of The Great Exhibition of the North, NBS is hosting a Future Buildings Exhibition.
Throughout the 80 days, NBS is supporting Maggie's Newcastle in their bid to raise enough funds to go ahead with a new extension of the building.
The exhibition is open to the public from Friday 22nd June until Sunday 9th September, 10am to 6pm every day.
`“Cancer hits you like a punch in the stomach. Few people hear anything much after the word ‘cancer’. Fear, compounded by ignorance and false knowledge, is a paralysing attack in its own right.’’
