London Landmarks Half Marathon 2023 · 2 April 2023 ·

We’re Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), and we’re a suicide prevention charity. We host a helpline for people affected by suicide, as well as vital online resources for anyone who needs them.

Story

I’ve written and re-written this so many times over the past few weeks. I simply cannot find the right words, but I know the importance is in speaking and being heard, even if it’s not perfect to everyone. So here goes…

Those that are close to me will know that this time last year I started my adventure into running. If you had told me when I started that by this time I would have ran a marathon and be training for more races, I would have laughed you out of the room.

I recently received the privilege to run the London Landmarks Half on behalf of CALM. For those that don't know, CALM is a charity which was founded in 1997; initially as a helpline for men prone to suicide, who were unlikely to contact mainstream services, it transitioned into a registered charity in 2006, and is still standing. They provide access to a 365-day helpline and web-chat service, as well as campaign and offer general advice. Crucially, they are a key player in the movement of speaking out and standing against suicide.

Below is a blurb from the CALM website:

'125 lives are lost every week to suicide. And 75% of all UK suicides are male. We exist to change this.

We do it by provoking conversation, running-life saving services, and bringing people together so they reject living miserably, get help when they need it and don't die by suicide.'

On 10 November 2019, one of my best friends, Kieran Nelson, tragically took his own life. A charismatic character, Kieran was a bundle of positive energy. Kieran was a very calm, collected and gentle person. He had an innate sense to empathise with other people, as if your pain was his. I’m still absolutely devastated by his loss, and still cry to this day. But although I’d prefer a world with Kieran in it, I know that’s not possible anymore. I would like to think his death symbolised something.

Running has become a powerful outlet for me. I don’t know why, but it just is. So I thought combining it with one of the most important moments of my life and using it to help support and empower others was the perfect opportunity, especially in collaboration with such a profound charity.

Mental health is a pandemic, and we need to learn to speak about our feelings more - especially as men! I've grown impatient with the stigmatisation and toxic masculinity centred around it. Talking and vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. Let's all break this mental barrier and keep the conversation going. This is how change is created. Let’s be that change!
