In a galaxy far far away...... well a different job a lifetime ago, I met a young IT Professional called Dale Lancaster.
Dale is a talented lad, always enthusiastic, smiling and seemingly eternally happy, although with a pair of ears that would make both Gary Lineker and Will Smith both do a double take!
Now despite his ears, Dale managed to somehow persuade an amazing and beautiful young lady - Jodie, not just to go out with him for one night - but actually to stick with him after that. That lad is the epitome of punching above his weight.
Sadly though the universe seems to like trying to balance out that good fortune and Jodie, who has just turned 30 and not only has she beaten cancer twice, but it’s come back for a 3rd go.
Unfortunately this time it’s terminal.
Which means Jodie has it for the rest of her life, but through their strength (and strong chemotherapy), they will fight to keep this vile illness at bay, so Jodie can watch her little girl, Sophie, grow, and make as many memories as humanly possible.
Although I haven't seen or spoken to Dale other than a few facebook chats since our career's took us in different directions, or had the undoubted pleasure of meeting Jodie the strongest woman imaginable - watching their lives unfold through Dale's timeline, the struggle, the strength, the determination and the inspirational way they live each day, I wanted to do something for a family that have battled through so much.
So what I am doing is trivial compared to what they have overcome and fight against each day.
I will be running along Hadrian's wall on June 18th 2022 - depending on the organisers sense of humour, this will be somewhere between 69 miles to 74 miles, and is to be completed in 24 hours.
So that is 2 Marathons, a Great North Run and probably a Park run all in 24 hours.... and we absolutely want to finish in less than that, as we have sprung for a night at Malmaison in Newcastle after the race!
The course takes us from Carlisle to Newcastle over roads, fields, woodland, city streets and way too many hills.
My ageing knees will protest, the blisters will come, but what a great cause.
All you have to do is stick your hand in your pocket and throw a few quid in the pot.
Do something amazing today!
(And take the time to show your loved ones how much they mean to you).
