The Great North Run on the 9th of September will not be my first half marathon; I've run 18 of those so far, and 7 marathons too. But it is the largest half marathon in the world and so has the same sort of attraction for runners as does the London Marathon.
About 57,000 runners will start out from Newcastle upon Tyne, cross over the iconic Tyne Bridge, speed through Gateshead and finish in South Shields boosted by the roar of the crowds lining the route. You might even see us on TV.
I am proud to support the British Heart Foundation again as a member of their corps of Heart Runners.
As you may, or may not, know, Dad, Ian Pirie, died from heart disease 7 years ago. He'd kept it quiet for a long time, but had been supporting the British Heart Foundation for a number of years so I ran my first half marathon, the Croydon Half, as a Heart Runner in Dad's memory.
I've since learned that my Granny, Emma Lanchester, also suffered from heart disease before she died 21 years ago, so this Heart Runner is going to be running for her.
Please sponsor me and support the British Heart Foundation in my Granny's memory.
