Story

Why am I jumping out of an aeroplane? Everything in my nature tells me it is dangerous, scary and a very long way from the safety of the ground! The only reason I am prepared to face my fears is to raise money in memory of a very special little boy.

In June 2012 my happy, cheeky 2 year old Nephew Olly sadly passed away from a very rare genetic condition. He had a minor illness which became worse and eventually he ended up in hospital, as his condition worsened he was admitted to the Children’s intensive care unit at Leicester and put in an induced coma. It was confirmed that he had Duncan’s syndrome, a very rare genetic condition that affects the immune system.

One morning we had a call from a nurse asking us to come to the hospital, we went straight over hoping for some positive news. We were sat in a room and told that Oliver had swelling of the brain and his body couldn’t fight anymore, they had decided that later that day they would withdraw the life support . We spent the day together as a family and had time to sit with Oliver and say our final goodbyes, something that we never expected to have to do. It was a surreal and devastating day; words cannot explain the sadness and heart ache that our family went through.

We all miss Oliver and not a day goes by without thinking about him. My 3 year old daughter, Millie, said to me a few weeks ago “Daddy, Olly lives in the clouds, I miss him! Can I play with him in the clouds” The sweet innocence of what she said broke my heart as I know that nothing in the world can ever make this possible.

The one thing I can do is raise money for the HR trust which is trying to find a cure for this condition, if they can find a cure it will mean another family won’t have to go through the tragic loss of a child. Family and friends have done amazing things to raise money for the charity, I couldn’t run a marathon and I don’t have much hair to cut off. But I am prepared face my fears and be pushed out of an aeroplane to raise money for the charity in memory of Oliver. Please help by sponsoring me, even if it’s just a couple of quid it all helps to raise money for the cause.
