Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Neo Orthodontics JustGiving page for Oral Mouth cancer.

Most people have heard of cancer affecting parts of the body such as the lungs or breasts. However, cancer can also occur in the mouth, where the disease can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks and throat.

Anyone can be affected by mouth cancer, whether they have their own teeth or not. Mouth cancers are more common in people over 40, particularly men. However, research has shown that mouth cancer is becoming more common in younger patients and in women. In the last year 6,767 have been diagnosed with mouth cancer in the UK – an increase of more than a third compared to a decade ago.

Sadly, more than 1,800 people in the UK lose their life to mouth cancer every year. Many of these deaths could be prevented if the cancer was caught early enough. As it is, people with mouth cancer are more likely to die than those having cervical cancer or melanoma skin cancer.

At Neo Orthodontics our team are taking on the challenge of walking 'The Old Man of Coniston'  for Oral Cancer month on the 27th October,  2017. We also wish to raise awarness by promoting the Blue Lip Selfie! We aim to raise as much money and awareness as possible.

Around 18 people every day are diagnosed with mouth cancer. Half would leave a mouth ulcer for more than a month before seeking medical advice.

One in three of us are unsure if they are at risk of mouth cancer while more than a third of people do not realise smoking tobacco is linked to the disease.

By learning and understanding more about mouth cancer, we can really help lower our risk of developing the disease,  we can also pass our knowledge on to those we love and care for too. By understanding more about how healthy lifestyle choices can increase our chances of staying cancer free, we can also improve the state of our oral health and general well being.
