I don't think anyone seeking the news over the weekend could
fail to be moved by the devastating situation in Nepal.
As a student of Loughborough University and a citizen of Nepal I urge everyone
to give generously. Nepal is a landlocked country and is listed as the top 10
poorest country in the world. Knowing that people who are less fortunate are
suffering I encourage everyone to proactively get involved to help those who
need it the most. I plan to visit Nepal in July/August time to see and give to
the people who need it the most. I will make sure that the money goes to a
reliable organisation and every single donation makes a difference.
Thank you in advance for your kind generosity !
Background
On Saturday 25th April 2015 in the morning, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck 40 miles from the capital Kathmandu in Nepal. The quake was felt in New Delhi and casualties and deaths have occurred in India, China and Bangladesh. However, the bulk of the fatalities, injuries and damage have been in Nepal.
Just over 24 hours after the quake there are over 2,000
confirmed deaths and fears that there are many more unaccounted for in remote
villages. Thousands have been injured and left exposed in the open due to the
destruction of homes and buildings. There have been numerous aftershocks
leading to further destruction and avalanches in the Himalayas. Hospitals are
overwhelmed and frightened inhabitants are sleeping in the open in fear of
these aftershocks, some of which have been magnitude 6.7. The worst affected
areas in Nepal are around the Lamjung and Gorkha districts.
Please give generously. We will report back regularly on progress and future
needs.
