Story
The Kidney is an important organ in our body. Failure of this vital organ leads to a catastrophic and a fatal consequence. The number of people suffering from kidney diseases is on a rise. Studies confirm the increasing prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease [CKD]. This leads to an excessive burden on the economics of health all over the World. Progressive Kidney Disease has an adverse effect on important organs such as the heart. Hence it is extremely important to address this issue at various levels [Education & Preventive Care, Primary Care, Secondary Care, Tertiary Care and Research].
The core problem of the kidney disease is due to dysregulated accumulation of scarring proteins within the kidney leading to ‘Fibrosis’. There is a lack of complete understanding of the mechanisms leading to this kidney fibrosis. Research is ongoing to unravel the mysterious pathways within the various types of kidney cells leading to fibrosis. It is important that this research is carried to find a cure to completely halt/slow down/reverse the process leading to Fibrosis.
From a clinical perspective, I have seen the suffering of many of my kidney patients. There is a lot that is being done to help them feel better, but it is still not enough to cure their own kidneys of the disease. There is nothing like having one’s own diseased kidneys completely cured of Fibrosis. Having lost a loved one to this dreaded disease, I can empathise with all those who have suffered or cared for their loved ones with this disease.
Research needs funding and this helps in finding a cure. I strongly believe in this. South West Thames Kidney Fund (http://www.kidneyfund.org.uk) is a registered charity [No.800952] which kindly supports and funds research at South West Thames Institute for Renal Research [www.swtirr.org.uk].
A team of sweaty kidney doctors, scientists, family members of patients are taking part in the 2016 Kingston Upon Thames Dragon Boat Race to raise money for this essential research. I am a part of the team. Please kindly show your support to the cause by donating to this charity on this site.
