Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running 2022 · 2 October 2022 ·
Following the shock of Jessica’s diagnosis with Ewing’s soft tissue sarcoma at the beginning of July and the immediate commencement of chemotherapy at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, normality changed for her and the whole family in every way imaginable.
There have been many challenges, tears, hugs and even some laughter, but what has made the numerous hospital stays more manageable has been a combination of the truly excellent care from
the NHS nurses and doctors coupled with the support that the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) provides. The charity believes that teenagers shouldn’t stop being teenagers because of a cancer diagnosis and they provide a fantastic common room on the ward as a social space just for them. With Jessica spending 3-6 days on chemotherapy at a time, the TCT room is the only space she sees outside her room, lifting her spirits and making the hospital stays much more bearable. As well as the cool amenities in the TCT room (PS5, large TV, comfy sofas, Wurlitzer juke box, pool table, electric organ, games, crafts and an endless supply of treats and drinks) the charity provides a youth support worker on the ward who organises outings and activities which connect all the young people going
through similar cancer journeys.
When Jessica heard that her Aunt Julie and Uncle Jim wanted to do something positive and raise money for charity by running the Loch Ness marathon on October 2nd, she immediately told them about the Teenage Cancer Trust and how she would love any funds raised to go to them because of the tremendous support they have given to her. Jessica has even signed up to walk the 5k on the same day hoping that her ongoing chemotherapy allows her to do it. It has now turned into a fantastic family effort with five of her cousins (Anna, Beth, Sarah, Faith and Daniel), four of her aunts and uncles (Julie, Geraldine, MC , Iain , Al and Jim) as well as her sister Madeleine and her Mum and Dad all
talking part in either the 5k, 10k or marathon.
Teenage Cancer Trust is a truly fantastic charity providing amazing support to teenagers in the most challenging of circumstances. Anything you can donate will be greatly appreciated.
