Michael's NeuroBike Down the Danube: An MND Challenge by an MND person.

NeuroBike Down the Danube · 1 September 2021
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I have ALS, a form of MND. I'm 75. I was diagnosed two years ago. Now I can no longer speak and eating is tricky. I can still ride a bike though. As I haven't managed to get myself enrolled in a research programme I thought I'd fight for the future another way. So I'm cycling . It's a personal challenge. I'm a round-the-town cyclist stepping out on 2800km trip and flipping a bird at ALS. And in the process raising money and awareness for MND.
I set out last September. I got as far as Budapest, fell off and broke my ankle. Ive set out again. It’s April and my target is as ever the Black Sea. Once there I plan to continue to Istanbul, now my final goal. You can also come and ride with me. The more the merrier!
I've made the Black Sea!
On the 4th of June I reached Sulina. Kilometre 0. The end of the Danube .
Thank you all for all your contributions to the cause of research into ALS.
It's been an exhausting ride. Especially the final sections.
Serbia was a delight. The researchers were present. There was a lot of press coverage.
Romania has been a more intimate experience. The natural generosity of the people is astounding. I've been received in monasteries; camped; welcomed everywhere. Within the newfound limits of my communication I've had stimulating conversations too.
I'm now heading down the coast towards Constanta; and Istanbul. I'll probably take a bus for that final step.
Later
The bike broke just before Constanta! I sent it back to Paris by carrier and continued on to Istanbul by bus.
Mission Accomplished.
We'll see what tomorrow brings. At the end of the road I'll probably be a very different person. you can follow my saga on Facebook: Neurobike @neurobikedownthedanube
