A Personal Message from Lord Alton:
Dear Friend of Jubilee Action,
I have just returned from a heart breaking visit to Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan. All three countries are counting the dreadful cost of genocide. The loss of life in the region shocked me to the core. It is why we are starting the Never Again Fund to provide fresh opportunities for the orphans and widows who are the living legacy of genocide. An astonishing 98% of children witnessed the killing during the genocide, and 40% of 10-14 year olds are orphans as a result. Yet the orphans we met are keen to gain employment skills to make a new life for themselves. In Darfur, Western Sudan, I met some of the 1.4 million people who have been internally displaced by Arab militia who are carrying out ethnic cleansing against their black African countrymen. One eight year old boy called Omar told us how he'd jumped on the top of a train to escape from Darfur after his parents had been killed. He came to Jubilee's Boy's Hope Centre where he now lives and goes to school. In spite of all this suffering, we should not give up. Here is what we can do if we raise the funds: 1. Build urgently needed homes for child-headed families in Rwanda. Each home costs just £7000. 2. Establish the Solace Centre which will provide trauma counselling, vocational training and IT skills for hundreds of widows and orphans in Rwanda. 3. Just £5000 will enable a drop in centre to be run all week at the Boy's Hope Centre for children like Omar in Sudan. 4. Support the Jedidiah Trust to create a sanctuary for ex-child soldiers in Congo. This is the difference your gift will make; £10 will buy building materials for a child-headed home in Rwanda. £25 will buy library books for 50 former child soldiers in Congo. £40 will pay for a week's food and soap for 50 boys at our drop in centre in Sudan. £100 will pay for trauma counselling for 5 widows of the Rwanda genocide. Our plans are ambitious but the need is great. There are many other children like Omar who also deserve the chance of a brighter future. You have the opportunity to provide it for them. Yours sincerely, David Alton, Lord Alton of Liverpool Please donate using the form below, thank you so much for your support - The Jubilee Team.
