Story

The last time I saw Keith alive was on my 36th Birthday. He shouldn't have been there. He'd been told to stay at home, isolated, in order to maximise the time he had left. But Keith wasn't that kind of person. He dragged himself out of the house and I slung his wheelchair in the boot of my car, for one last dinner, one more glass of wine, one last evening of putting the World to rights.

Keith died from a rare form of leukemia. For a fit, healthy, 35 year old, it was virtually unheard of. It took 18 months, from the day we went for a bike ride where "he felt a bit weak", to the heartbreaking act of reading his eulogy. In those 18 months the suffering he endured, the pain and discomfort and indignity I watched him go through, would have broken anyone else far sooner.

There were so many people that helped and supported Keith during those  months. But the organisation he spoke most fondly of was Bloodwise. We have to find a way to cure Cancer, to prevent people in the future from living the hell that Keith went through. But until then, people suffering from this evil disease need help, support, reassurance. And that's what Bloodwise do. They are for the here and now.

Keith and I had talked for a long time about doing City To Summit together. It was always going to be tough. A half marathon, 120 miles on the bike and then a marathon over Ben Nevis will undoubtedly push my body to the edge of what it is capable of. To try to deal with it I have a structured training programme of 5.30am starts, 6 days a week, every week. It's tough, and it's going to get tougher, but it will be worth it. Worth it for those suffering from cancer today, tomorrow and in the future. And worth it for Keith.

Please help me do this.
