I am raising funds for the Bethlehem Hospice Trust which provides those with life limiting illnesses palliative home care.
Bethlehem, in the West Bank of Palestine is a special place for great many people in the word. It is special to Christians, Muslims and Jews. The world has an idealised view of Bethlehem but many forget that it is also a living community facing the everyday challenges of everyday living in a new and emerging state - Palestine.
Among the many difficulties faced by the people of Bethlehem is the provision of Healthcare which is not well developed. There is no palliative care provision for the terminally ill.
Twenty-five per cent of all deaths are cancer related. Three out of every four persons first diagnosed with cancer are at stage four (4 terminal). The average age for cancer related death is 52 years. Those with other life limiting illness add to the number needing care.
Many of those without the benefit of palliative care die in pain with families unable to help or comfort them.
