An international crisis

Since 2011, Syria has been embroiled in a devastating civil war. For almost a decade now, Syrian civilians have been fleeing the atrocities of conflict. The plight of Syrian refugees presents the largest refugee and displacement crisis of our time. 

Who are we?

We are a group of volunteers who met through our local community organisation, the Newington Green Alliance, with a shared passion for making a difference through Community Sponsorship.

What is Community Sponsorship?

Community refugee sponsorship is an initiative which enables us all to get involved in welcoming and supporting a family of Syrian refugees who will be resettled, through a safe and legal route, into our wonderful community of Newington Green. We work with CitizensUK and RESET to get permission from our local authority and the Home Office to resettle a family into the area. In doing so, we commit to providing them with support for a minimum of one year.

As part of our commitment to the initiative, we must raise an absolute minimum of £9,000 (£12,000 recommended for London). 

This will go towards :

- sourcing safe and suitable housing for our family, including subsidising housing if necessary

- providing ESOL tuition / English classes

- providing a welcome package to help the family settle in

- empowering them with the local knowledge and support required to fully settle in and get involved in their local community
