Cricket Without Boundaries · 27 November 2022

Cricket Without Boundaries is dedicated to helping, educating and developing local communities around the world through the spread and growth of cricket. Crucially, CWB also uses cricket as a tool in the fight against AIDS. CWB’s training sessions have at their heart discussion about the disease in terms of prevention, treatment and equality of treatment for those with and without the disease.

Story

In February 2023 I will be heading out to Rwanda for the charity Cricket Without Boundaries.  CWB is a charity that uses cricket to deliver health and social messages in countries around the world.  It works to reduce HIV transmission whilst linking this to cricket coaching sessions.

The charity has three main goals:

1) Empower Communities

2) Coach children and train adults

3) Link the game to messages and action on health and social issues

In order to cover the costs of the project, which includes transport, accommodation and cricket equipment that we will leave in Rwanda, I am looking to raise a minimum of £950 for the two week trip plus I will look to fund raise, with events. a further amount to cover flights and vaccinations.

Cricket Without Boundaries in Rwanda
Situated in the Great Lakes region of sub-Saharan Africa, Rwanda is known for its many hills and stunning scenery. Rwanda has a turbulent history but is rapidly developing with a lot of investment into the country.

The Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA) is the country’s cricketing governing body, based in Kigali. It gained International Cricket Council status as an affiliate country in 2003 and has been developing ever since. The Rwanda U19 Women’s national team qualified for the first ever U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in 2022, many of whom were first introduced to cricket by Cricket Without Boundaries.

There are 210,200 people currently living with HIV in Rwanda, and there are approximately 5,400 new infections each year. There are 5,900 children and young adolescents living with the illness in the country. Young women aged between 20-24 years, are three times more likely to have HIV than men. 76% of all HIV-positive adults, including almost 80% of HIV-positive women, have achieved viral load suppression, which is widely used measure of effective HIV treatment in a population.
