Story

Every 5 minutes, over 3 people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer *.

I am raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support by completing 100 burpees a day, for 100 consecutive days.

20 years ago, in 2000 my Dad was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer, but I am proud and forever grateful that he received the best in medical care and treatment to assist him to beat it. With it now 20 years since the diagnosis I wanted to raise funds to help all those affected by cancer.

I have chosen Macmillan because they are the UK’s leading cancer supportive charity, and offer assistance to thousands of people every day in the form of physical, emotional and financial support. Life can be turned upside down when receiving a cancer diagnosis, and whilst not always life threatening – it is always life changing. Macmillan professionals offer to help make sense of it all with tailored care and support – and it can have a hugely positive impact on an individuals physical and emotional well-being, and can vastly improve the recovery process.

£25 can fund an hour of Macmillan’s support line – a vital piece in the jigsaw of care that Macmillan provide.

Working in leisure has given me full appreciation of exercise and its positive influence on an individuals physical and mental well-being, and what better way to celebrate that than a burpee challenge! I am well known for being in the small percentage of people who actually enjoy burpees – although doing this many may change my mind! Macmillan are also the current charity partner of the company I work for – Everyone Active – so this offers a link with the facility I work at and the fantastic group work we are doing as a team.

I plan to have fun throughout the challenge, but also to test and push my fitness levels. I will aim to complete every 10th day in an unbroken set as a benchmark – and will break up others across the day to fit in with work and family!

*Analysis based on 366,303 diagnoses of cancer in the UK in 2017, obtained via data published by the national cancer registries.
