My brother has talked me into doing the London Triathlon on August 8th 2010. That's a 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run. You know I'm not built for that sort of thing. So it's going to hurt. Check out last year's London triathlon at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEmNCaGFTbc&feature=related
I'm hoping to raise some money in support of a UK charity, Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide.
The World Health Organisation estimates that approximately 4000 people commit suicide in the UK every year. That is tragedy enough but they leave behind fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and colleagues all of whom suffer a huge amount of emotional trauma. They face guilt, anger and pain for many years after the event. In addition they may experience exhaustion, insomnia, anxiety, depression and loneliness. Most tragically of all they are much more likely to commit suicide themselves than the general population.
Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide aim to help those bereaved by the suicide of a close relative or friend. They provide emotional and practical support through a confidential telephone helpline, e-mail, group meetings and conferences, helping with practical issues and problems and providing a safe, confidential environment in which bereaved people can share their experiences and feelings, so giving and gaining support from each other. Finally they work to improve public awareness of suicide and the issues around it. Have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGxWGKbrsTM to see what Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide do.
