Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

Over the next five days, Nick is planning to cycle from John O Groats to Lands End in five days.  To add to the challenge, he is doing it solo, with no support vehicle and on a fixed wheel bike ( one gear and no freewheeling!!)

DAY ONE (20.05.09 / 6.45pm) :  Nick has just reached Aviemore (150 miles from JOG) and is really pleased with his progress since his 7.30am start.  After a much needed food stop he is planning on pushing out another 30-40miles.  The first 80 miles were a pleasure despite the strong headwind and heavy downpours but the last 70 were constant very long climbs.  He is looking to bivvi bag down before midnight.

DAY TWO (21.05.09 / 6.30pm) : Last night Nick managed to get one hours sleep in a small forest after cycling 192 miles.  Condensation in his bivi bag saturated his sleeping bag and subsequently made him v. chilly.  Despite obvious fatigue and severe winds he has managed 140 miles before teatime.  After his fish and chips he is intent on adding another 40 miles to his total, taking him over the England Scotland border.

DAY THREE:  Well last night Nick managed another 42 miles before a slightly better nights sleep in a noisy truckers motel in Carlisle. He rested his aching neck and back whilst drying his bivi bag and stuff out a bit, which was a bonus.
After a big feed in the morning he set off at 7.30am. I had some great news that 'surfmountain' (shop where bivi bag was from) were v. keen to help and had organised a free replacement first class bivi for him to collect in a camping shop in Preston, only 100yds out of his way. Unfortunately, Nick did not pick up his text message until he was at Warrington and had sped way past his rescue package......
Nevertheless he has had a good day and by 7pm had cracked 140 miles. The weather has not been kind to him again and he has found it much slower due to 100s of red lights, diversions and constant map reading. He was just setting off again when he called in and was aiming for the usual 30 - 40 miles before getting some sleep (somewhere / hopefully)!
PS Looking like he'll be at LE late Sunday evening!

DAY FOUR: (23.05.09 / 8am) Last night Nick made amazing progress and cycled another 45 miles before bivi bagging in a field on the road into Wolverhamptom. So according to my calculations his daily mileage to date is 182 / 192 / 185 = 559 miles in total so far!

2pm - Have just heard that Nick is already only 10 miles away from Bristol!!

9pm - Well as usual Nick is making excellent headway and at 7pm I heard he was enjoying a steak 'n' ale pie near Burnham on Sea. He was about to head off again and do another 50 plus to get to Exeter for some shut eye! He has really got the bit between his teeth for an early Sunday evening finish. Will obviously keep you posted and aim to update this site again at 3pm to let you know his e.t.a!

DAY 5 (24.05.09 / 8am) Nick had a storming final night and completed 200 miles by 2am, ending up in Okehampton. He has just called from Launceston so looks like he could be in at LE anytime from 2pm onwards.

10.45am - Nick is motoring through the county and was at Roche at 10.45am.  Looking like he'll be at Chiverton cross at around 12pm, Hayle at 1pm and Lands End at 2pm.

6.50pm - Nick arrived to a big welcoming comittee at 1.54pm after pushing a very fast pace on the last leg.  He was escorted from Chiverton Cross to the finish by a relay of fire appliances which spurred him on and he soon had a cold beer in hand.  After numerous photos and conversations Nick signed in at the hotel to register his journey.  Then he left for home for a soak in the bath and lots to eat.

Thank you for your support throughout my journey.  I have raised over £1000 pounds and will divide this between my two chosen charities, Precious Lives and the Fire Fighters Charity.
