Story

So, this isn't the first time I've e done something that could be categorised as 'daft' for charity. In fact, it's not the first time it's been a daft sporting challenge either...

Since my triathlon in London in 2008 where I was able to raise a fantastic amount of money for WaterAid, a lot has changed. I'm a little more committed at home these days (!) and definitely less fit than I was playing hockey three times a week along with football, golf, the gym....it's safe to say I'm in sporting retirement. My only deadlifts these days are the boys out of their cots at 4am for a feed.

In 2011, I also lost my grandfather to cancer. I was away at the time on a mutual aid commitment with work helping the thousands of people affected by the London riots and never got to say goodbye properly. He was something of a lynchpin for that side of our family and we still miss him today.

When I saw the adverts for the UWCB, it meant two things to me: an opportunity to try a sport I've never done but always wanted to participate in (it's something of a rarity to find something I haven't tried) but more importantly it would be a chance to do something to help fight a disease that, as they say, has or will affect all of us at some point. The opportunity to watch me potentially take a beating along the way in the boxing ring should probably provide motivation for at least a few of you to help make sure it's a decent contribution to that cause. For those of you wondering where the pain is in this gain, I've probably got to lose two kilos in six weeks to drop to welterweight as I am definitely not a light-middle and weight loss is not the easiest when you weigh nothing in the first place...training twice a week at the moment with everything else going on is also a massive commitment and something I'm massively grateful to Lucy for putting up with. So if nothing else, donate to support her plight in putting up with me...

As ever, anything you can afford to donate is massively appreciated. If you're interested in attending the show - and it would be fantastic to get even a few people there to raise some money/get something back for your donations/massage my ego with some chanting - please drop me a line on 07740 411884 or email nickherceg@gmail.com. Tickets are twenty pounds standing and fifty pounds for a table seat and a meal as well (it's at the Radission in Bedford, so should be decent scran).

Thanks to all of you and hopefully speak to you all soon. I'll post some photos to entertain you all in due course.
