Story
I first heard about Liberty Schurer and Liberty's Legacy from a close friend a few years ago and have wanted to do my small part for this great cause ever since.
Liberty Grace Schurer was just two years older than my daughter Nicole. She was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in September 2016 on her 13th birthday, a rare and very aggressive form of bone cancer.
During her treatment, Liberty was an absolute inspiration, she just got on with it bravely, rarely losing her amazing sense of humour and that dazzling smile for which she will forever be remembered.
Sadly just days from finishing her treatment in August 2017 a new lump was discovered. Not only had the Ewing Sarcoma returned, but devastatingly it had extensively spread throughout her lungs, her liver and her lymph glands. There was nothing more that could be done.
It was during those last few weeks of her life that the idea for Liberty's Legacy was born. Throughout the course of her illness Liberty's and her family's biggest frustration was the total lack of funding and research into this deadly form of the disease. The protocol with which she was treated was decades old, designed for adults, and most shockingly survival rates for Ewing's Sarcoma have not improved in nearly 40 years. How could that be?
Liberty's greatest wish was that we fundraise in her name, with all proceeds to go towards research into Ewing Sarcoma so that no other child suffers in the same way and no other family be devastatingly ripped apart. Through Liberty's Legacy, we hope that her name will live on and allow us to bring Liberty into the future with us, and give honour and meaning to her life.
This very tragic and very inspirational story has been my motivation for running what seems a crazy distance for a complete novice. Friends that know me well will correctly guess that I haven't run more than two hundred yards in my life. Well, I sure hope I can push myself to do the whole 42.2 km (26.2 miles, sounds somewhat easier) after long months of training and I hope this will appeal to your generous side and will make you open your wallets wide for Liberty's Legacy and The Bone Cancer Research Trust.
I have set an ambitious fundraising target of £3000, all of which will go to The Bone Cancer Research Trust. Despite being a small charity they fund more research projects exploring primary bone cancer than any other UK organisation. They are dedicated to saving lives and improving outcomes for people affected by primary bone cancer. Last year alone BCRT committed an incredible £807,824 to pioneering bone cancer research.
You can find a lot more information and resources on their own website www.bcrt.org.uk
Huge thanks for your support and for your generosity!!!
