Winter 2020 was a tough time for many of us, but the sucker punch was learning our dear dear friend Simon Kelly had been diagnosed with Glioblastoma.
Words cannot describe the disbelief, anger, sadness, rage, and despair those of us who know and love Simon experienced in the weeks and months that followed, cruelly made worse by CoVid's curse keeping us apart.
Simon fought hard but we lost him by late spring.
Selfishly, I miss him. I hate that he can't be here to put his arm around us, smile at us with his kind eyes, or fill us with his boundless and infectious enthusiasm for life. We all miss him. But he left an indelible mark on those who knew and loved him, and for that reason, he will never be far from us.
So fuck cancer, and this is now the third otherwise healthy and wonderful person I've known who has died from this disease.
We humans are pretty impressive when we want to be. We can create CoVid vaccines in record time and send billionaire’s into orbit on giant space-phalluses, so why not get a step closer to eradicating cancers like Glioblastoma.

After 30 (fun) years of smoking and bad decisions. I trained for last year's virtual NYC Marathon and managed it in 4:09. Not bad for an old man, but I am challenging myself to do a little bit better this time!
This year we get to run with 30,000 people through the five boroughs. I've been solidly training since the last marathon and I am on track to beat 4hrs. I'll soon be running about 50 miles a week and am training pretty hard.
No matter how hard you train, the battle of completing a marathon is more mental than physical. Having a reason to run, and people to dedicate your toughest miles to makes all the difference.
So this is my reason to run. Simon was, and is still, an inspiration to me and many others - and I know he'll be there to cheer me on when the idea of taking a break at mile 21 pops into my head... and I know he'll be there to have a beer with me afterwards!
Please donate, so we can kick cancer's ass and keep good people down here on planet earth with us.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast, and totally secure. Your donation goes directly to the charity, and your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
