Great South Run 2009 · 25 October 2009 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

**UPDATE**

I ran 9 miles on Sunday in 1hr 40mins. Only a few days to go, fingers crossed to complete all 10 on Sunday without resorting to walking... Huge thanks to all of you for sponsoring me!

_______

Hi all,

Those of you who know me well will be aware that walking is a major component of my transport arrangements in London. You will also be aware that running is notable in its absence from my life. I do not run.

This is about to change.

In a fit of crazy enthusiasm, watching people old enough to be my grandparents marching around proudly wearing their medals after the London Marathon, and in an attempt to contribute something to the Alzheimer's Society - something I've been meaning to do for a while - I have signed up to try to complete the Great South Run this October. That is, ten miles of actual running by Nicky. It should be comedy gold.

On a more serious note, I'm trying to raise money for a genuinely important cause. Alzheimer's is an horrific illness that causes lasting pain and grief to many families, who watch their loved ones gradually disappear while still being alive and requiring constant care. Many of them suffer in relative silence due to the stigma attached to the disease, but it's increasing in prevalence. The Alzheimer's Society not only funds research into the causes of the disease - as-yet not entirely known, and essential to find if we're to discover a cure - but also provides help and support for carers and those affected. For more information, the website of the charity is here: http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/site/index.php

Please do donate if you feel it's a worthy cause, whatever you can spare. I promise to run my heart out - photographic evidence will be provided!

Much love,

Nicky xx
