We fund research and raise awareness to create a world free from meningitis

Story

The funny thing about meningitis (if there is one) is that being lucky enough to be a survivor means that it's just the start of the next battle. All limbs intact ? Check. Hearing ? Check. Invisible after effects ? Ah. We have a problem. Don't get me wrong, I know how lucky we are and if surviving Meningitis was a competition we would be one of the winners. But it's not a competition (and if it was, not one I recommend entering) and there are no prizes !!

The Meningitis Research Foundation have been an endless support to us over the last 10 years since Megan, our youngest daughter, had meningitis, and in 2011 I set myself a challenge to raise 10,000 for them. For a wrong side of 40 gin loving couch potato I've been doing slightly what could be viewed as completely insane things for a few years to raise money for them - so far I've run (limped) the Great South 10 mile Run, climbed all the way to the top of Kilimanjaro,  done the Thames Path 50k Overnight Challenge, been carted off the London to Brighton 100k in an ambulance, and attempted it again - it's a bloody long way to walk non stop !!! This Year I'm doing the London Marathon. Dressed as a purple fairy. My goal is simply to finish it !

Three years ago I was honoured to be appointed a Regional Ambassador for the Charity. The following year Megan was appointed one of the first Junior Ambassadors (proud mum & dad moment !!) and her sister Mia was asked to take on the role too for her unwavering support and fundraising. Megan also joined in on the fundraising in a big way and had all her beautiful hair cut off to raise more money, in 2015 and afterwards donated her ponytail to a charity that makes wigs for children affected by cancer.

It's not really about that all that though, it's about the money. I know I'm always begging for money, but those vaccines you had, and those new ones your babies & grandchildren and students & teenagers will have this year will save lives and the few quid you give does that.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Meningitis is deadly; killing and seriously disabling in hours. Small children and young adults are high risk, but all ages can be affected. Globally 1,000 people die daily. We fundraise to invest in research, campaign for vaccines, provide symptom information and support those already affected.
