On the 4th of Febuary 2011, our family lost a loving Husband, Father, Brother and Uncle. Steven became acutely unwell on the 29th January, the day after his 40th birthday. He had been feeling under the weather for most of the previous week. He collapsed at home, suddenly, with a seizure. Upon arrival at hospital and after many investigations, it was discovered that Steven had suffered from a spontaneous Subarachnoid Haemorrhage. The neurosurgeons explained that Steven had bled from an aneurysm that was not only complex but also in a place that was difficult to reach. It wasn't looking good. Unfortunately, whilst waiting for treatment of the aneurysm, Steven had an irreversible catastrophic re-bleed. Steven was never to wake up again. In a sheer act of selflessness, his loving wife Lorraine took the decision (as Steven would have wanted) to donate his organs. Again, this was not meant to be. Steven was too poorly and died peacefully in the arms of Lorraine and his eldest son Daniel. However, Steven did manage to donate certain tissues from his eyes, that have gone on to successfully help others. It is for this reason, that I will be running for The Stroke Association.
An estimated 150,000 people have a stroke in the UK each year. Stroke accounts for 53,000 deaths in the UK each year. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in England and Wales, after heart disease and cancer. At least 450,000 people are severely disabled as a result of stroke in England. It is assumed that people who have strokes are always of the elderly population. This is not the case. Stroke affects all age groups. Many people do not survive, and if they do, they can be left with terrible disability that will affect them for the rest of their lives. People that do survive can see their relationships and family units break down, due to the tremendous strain that is caused by the legacy of stroke. The after effects are life long!
Please help me, help others who have been affected by this terrible condition. Thank you.
