VSO Volunteering · 31 December 2015 ·

VSO is an international development organisation that brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. Everyday, VSO volunteers are working to empower people living in some of the world’s most marginalised communities.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am raising money for ICS and VSO to enable them to keep sending volunteers overseas in aid of economically deprived countries.

I have been placed on the Zambia, Nyimba project where we will be focussing on health. I will be living with a host family over there for the duration of my time there (3 months) and paired with a local counterpart, which means I will be living with the locals and experiencing first hand how they live their day to day lives.

•A little bit about Zambia•

HDI ranking: 141/187 in 2014 - 'medium human development'
GNI per capita: 2898 dollars
Life expectancy: 58.1 years
6.5 mean years of schooling

•What I will be doing there•

During my stay I will be participating in organising various events for the locals in order to achieve project outcomes, some examples include:
- SRH (sexual reproductive health) peer education sessions in community
- Anti-Aids clubs/Health corners in schools
- Workshops for life skills
- Awareness raising (raising issues in Nyimba)
- Resource development
- Community action days
- Active citizenship days

•VSO's objectives there•

- Helping to adapt local health services to better serve vulnerable groups e.g. Youth
- Helping to strengthen and coordinate pre-existing health structures in the area
- Assist in the implementation of the Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health Campaign
- Promoting health education at the local level

•Some extra info•

- Political situation: Relatively peaceful history
- Temperamental but fairly stable electricity (although some homes still use charcoal)
- Possible dependence on boreholes (community water pumps)
- Females expected to wear Chitenges (cotton printed fabric tied around the waist and worn in the home)
