The need for impartial and objective research is nowhere more evident than in relation to concussion. Only through stringent, independent medical investigation can we establish if there is a clear association between recurrent head impact in sport and neurodegenerative disorders in later life. The CONCUSSION FOUNDATION is committed to funding research into the long-term effects of impact sport and supports the work being undertaken by The International Concussion and Head Injury Research Foundation Limited (ICHIRF)

Story

First things first I would like to thank you for taking time out of your day to stop by and look at my page.

My name is Nic although I hope most of you will know that.

I am raising money and spreading awareness for a charity that I hold particularly close to my heart for multiple reasons. As someone who enjoys sports especially contact sports such as Rugby, American Football, Boxing and Ice Hockey I fully understand the risks of injury... specifically to the head and brain. As a Rugby player with 20+ years of playing time behind me I have had my fair share of concussions over the years and even now as a coach I see head knocks multiple times throughout the season.

Here's a few interesting facts about rugby and concussions:

  • Around 1200 rugby players suffer head injuries each year
  • About two-thirds of these are concussions or brain injuries
  • On average for every 1000 hours of rugby played including training 18 concussions are recorded
  • 1 in 5 concussions happen in the training environment

Because of this my charity of choice is the Concussion Foundation

I am not asking any person to donate but all donations would be greatly appreciated to help fund what I believe is a fantastic cause, This run for me is mainly about raising awareness about concussions and the long term effects including how it affects the individuals in later life.
