Ovarian cancer has been dubbed the "silent killer" - typically, most women are diagnosed very late, due to mild or no symptoms until the disease has already spread.
My mum was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer earlier this year and, for the last 9 months, has been an inspirational warrior undergoing cycles of chemo and a major operation. She has shown unbelievable mental and physical strength, resilience and positivity throughout this time - fighting to be here for my sister and I.
We are one of the lucky families. Due to life-saving treatment, the support of family and friends, and the power of prayer, she is on the road to remission.
But the scary truth is, the five-year survival rate for advanced ovarian cancer is less than 40%, with an 80% chance of recurrence. This is a fear we will continue to live with. Early diagnosis is KEY and there is still so much to do to increase awareness, testing and funds for those touched by this disease.
Priya and I will therefore be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon (13.1 miles) on 9th October, on behalf of Team Target.
Target Ovarian Cancer is the UK's leading ovarian cancer charity. Together with the ovarian cancer community, they are transforming the futures of 41,000 women in the UK who are living with ovarian cancer and thousands more who are yet to be diagnosed.
They work to:
- improve early diagnosis
- fund life-saving research
- provide much-needed support to women with ovarian cancer
They are the only charity fighting ovarian cancer on all three of these fronts, across all four nations of the UK. They work with women, family members and health professionals, to ensure we target the areas that matter most for those living with ovarian cancer.
A special thank you to my dear friend Priya for taking on this challenge with me.
