Story
So why Boxing? Marc Edwards is my personal trainer, he owns runs PTSOS here in Shipston on Stour where I live. Last year he organised a non for profit charity event "a Boxing Competition" a "Fight Night" for his clients, he asked if I wanted to go along and watch it. Unfortunately the dreaded covid struck and I couldn't go :-( Once I was well he joked well next time you can fight.. and here I am, signed up and I've had 1 lesson! Some of you know I do pink belt kick boxing.. it's very very different.. pink belt is women only, non contact, pads and gloves, no rings, no grading, etc.. This Boxing competition will be head guards and gum shields.. I've never worn a gum shield ever!
It's a huge challenge for me, both fitness, skill and being in a ring. So please do support me, and do support my chosen charity as I hope you can appreciate the opportunity and service it offers to Children :-)
Why The Friendship Project for Children Charity?
My sister and I the most wonderful childhood, we had love, support, encouragement and opportunity. Not all kids are as fortunate and I have met quite a few now who have still gone on to make the most out of their lives and talents. Most of these people have had a mentor, someone who they can look up to, inspire them, support them, open up the world to them.
When the opportunity arose for me to get fund raising again after quite a long time, I really wanted to find a charity that supported my values and beliefs that all children deserve to live as children and experience everything life has to offer so that later in life they might make a difference themselves.
The Friendship Project is a Warwickshire-wide charity that matches children and young people (who are in need, for a variety of reasons) with volunteers, for friendship and fun. The child may be caring for a sick parent or be limited to where they can go on holiday because of a disabled sibling or other family member. For some children, even playing in the park or going to the cinema are a rare treat. Having some time out from often difficult home situations really does improve the child’s self-esteem and self-worth. Our volunteers report that they too enjoy spending time with their Younger Friend knowing that they are really making a difference to a child’s life.
Julie and I had 10 schools in 9 years aged 4/5 - 13/14 respectively. We were each others friend, so whenever I walked into that new classroom Julie had my back and I had hers. We didn't ever feel alone.
Julie died at 27 years old in a climbing accident, and as tragic and traumatic that was and still can be for us, her death did inspire me to be more active. Julie was the sporty fit adventurous sister, and me well I liked to party ;-) one of her last conversations with me?? or was it a lecture?? Nina you are going to die of a heart attack before you are 30 if you don't sort yourself out.. memories hey.. so 19 years later I've done many things like run a marathon, ridden quite a few 100 mile sportives ( even on a tandem), and cycle toured across France, Scotland and the length of the Moselle river with my Dad. More recently I've done alot of sailing and qualified as a skipper. However I've never boxed.
I’ll be fighting in 1 match 3 x 2 minutes rounds against another lady yet to be determined.
