SHIVA Charity promotes education in Nepal and Sri Lanka. We improve buildings, equipment, teaching, and subsidizing teachers' pay. It has built 28 nursery schools in Sri Lanka to replace those destroyed by the tsunami. It is helping victims of the Nepal earthquake ... committed to action not words.

Story

Welcome to David & Nina Leigh’s Just Giving
page.

As many of you will you know, David and I
have recently turned 60 and celebrated our 30
th
wedding anniversary.

We would like to ask you for your help.

Ten years ago following the Tsunami on
Boxing Day 2004, we raised money to build and set up a nursery school for 4-7 year olds in a village called Batticaloa in Sri Lanka.

The school was built by a small, little known charity called SHIVA (Schools Helping India Voluntary Association) The charity
was established over 15 years ago by a number of Bristol teachers and is a non-political, non-religious organisation dedicated to working with the poorest regions of Nepal and Sri Lanka. As well as building schools, the charity also assists with soup kitchens for street children and a variety of educational projects.

How can you help?

The school is called St Agnant (and despite its name is  non-denominational).  The school provides essential education for up to 40 boys and girls aged between 4-7 from all backgrounds and ethnic groups. The school requires £1000 each year for maintenance, resources and to cover the cost of two teachers.

A donation of £60 will pay for essential equipment and the salary of an experienced teacher for one month. (However any amount of money, large or small, will be gratefully accepted)  We have set out some photos below to give you an idea of where your money will be going.

You can see the School's 2009 prize giving on YouTube

It is our intention to continue our  involvement in this project over the coming years and we will let you know how things are progressing.

Please do give as much money as you feel able and remember that every bit really does help.
