Thank you for taking the time to visit my page!
I am ecstatic to have been offered a volunteering placement with VSO. The programme is government funded, and volunteers are also asked to raise some money to contribute to their project in the country. I will be volunteering in Bukoba, Tanzania for 3 months with the aim of helping schoosl to improve their quality of education.
Why volunteering abroad?
After completing my BSc, I have developed an interest in working in international development. This placement will allow me to pursue my passion and gain an insight into this field.
Being a child to immigrant parents, from a young age I have been aware of the vast range of opportunities that were available to me as a result of my parents setting home in Europe. Many people lack these basic opportunities simply because of the countries they call home do not provide them. Charities like VSO allow me to make a difference and combat this inequality.
What will I be doing in Tanzania?
Although 95% of children in Tanzania are now entering primary education, the quality of education remains weak.
During my placement my work may include: gathering research to measure impact of the programme, creating sustainable teaching aids for classrooms, setting up and running school clubs for children.
Why VSO?
I have chosen VSO as the charity I would like to volunteer for because of the importance they place on sustainability. The projects ensure that the work volunteers do will be able to impact after their departure e.g. focus on giving teachers the skills they need to teach rather than teach the children ourselves.
Each volunteer is paired with an in country volunteer, this allows us to integrate with the community . Furthermore, we will be living with a host family allowing us to understand the lifestyle of the people in the community and giving us a first hand perspective of the problems they face on a day to day basis.
