Miles for Meals · 1 November 2020 ·

We’re an anti-poverty charity & community of food banks, working together to ensure no one in the UK needs a food bank, while providing practical support for people left without enough money. (Please note we're unable to forward funds onto individual food banks, funds raised here go to Trussell)

Story

In the UK, more than 14 million people are living in poverty – including 4.5 million children. In light of the recent vote that blocked extending free school meals to children in need over school holidays we are doing a Miles 4 Meals Challenge for the whole of November. In the UK a free school meal costs approximately £2.50 per meal. Our aim is raise enough money to pay for 300 school meals ahead of the Christmas Break which is £750. To do this, we are going to cycle 12.5 miles a day for all 30 days of November. The 12.5 miles each equates to 5 school meals a day or £12.50 per day. We’d like to ask for donations from friends and family to support us on this by donating enough money to cover at least one school meal (£2.50) but if you’re feeling generous to donate for two or three! We are donating the money to The Trussel Trust who support a nationwide network of food banks and provide emergency food and support to people locked in poverty, and campaign for change to end the need for food banks in the UK. Trussel Trust support more than 1,200 food bank centres in the UK and between April 2019 and March 2020, food banks in their network provided a record 1.9 million food supplies to people in crisis, an 18% increase on the previous year. In light of the COVID pandemic and lack of free school meals over the holidays, reliance on necessities from food banks is likely to increase even more as people across the country face hardship over the winter months. It’s not right that people can’t afford the basics. With your help, we can help end the need for food banks. As a nation, we expect no one should be left hungry or destitute. Illness, disability, family breakdown or the loss of a job can happen to any of us. With your help #ThisCanChange
