Camino de Santiago · 9 April 2020
The Yulin Dog Meat "festival" is an event that starts on June 21st of every year during the summer solstice and it lasts for 10 long horrifying days in which 10,000–15,000 dogs (as well as cats) are tortured and then consumed. However, it is estimated 25 million dogs are stolen, sold, bought, and eaten every year with the illegal dog and cat meat trade.
On 9th April 2020 (Pete Wilson and) I will begin our 40-day Camino de Santiago walking 25 km's a day on behalf of Dogs. With as many as 30 million dogs a year suffering for the dog meat trade across Asia, it is simply impossible to rescue our way out of this cruel business, so that is why rescuing is only one part of our strategy. In China, HSI helped to launch a team of activists called China Animal Protection Power, who liaise with local police to pull over trucks on the highways crammed with dogs and cats on their way to slaughterhouses.
When you walk the Camino, you have to have a really big 'why' to get you through the days when you simply just don't want to do it anymore.
This is the biggest 'why' I can think of.
A larger percentage of these dogs consist of pets stolen right from their loving families. The rest of the dogs are made up of captured strays from the streets and some raised in dog farms. After these animals are stolen, bought, or captured they are then transported for days without any food or water, crammed in tiny cages together so tightly that they are unable to even move.
At the Yulin festival, throughout those days, these animals will be hung, burned, skinned, boiled, torched, dismembered, electrocuted and beaten...ALIVE..out in the streets for public view. But If that isn't bad enough, they intentionally torture these animals in front of the
other animals in order to create even more stress and fear. The belief behind the torturing and slaughtering them while still ALIVE, is because the people of Yulin believe the more adrenaline and fear that runs through the blood, the more tender and better tasting the meat will be.
Animal rights advocate, actor Ricky Gervais, took to social media on this issue in order to share his views on the controversial Yulin Dog Meat Festival, set to take place during the summer solstice in June every year.
“It's sadistic, its fucking mental," a visibly upset Gervais began. “It's like hell. It's the fucking nastiest thing I've ever heard of... I am at a loss. ”
Since dogs are considered companion animals in Europe and the U.S, seeing them suffer in this way strikes deeply at us all.
Especially since some of the dogs that have been rescued from the meat trade were found to have microchips in them, sometimes even collars! I can’t even imagine the pain that some must feel from not only getting their dog stolen but knowing the horrible fate that they will endure.
Together, as a society, we can put an end to this madness. We cannot sit idly and let these things sort themselves out on their own. And every day that we remain silent, is another day we have decided that these animals are not worth the fight. If you want to join the movement to end
the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, please sign Humane Society International‘s
petition and maybe even consider donating to the cause.
