Story

🏊🏼🚣🏼‍♀️🚴🏼🏃🏼‍♀️

In June 2017 Olivia and I will take on the Norfolk Superhero!

We plan to smash out 58 miles along the North Norfolk Coast through a mixture of open water swimming, ocean kayaking, road biking and bog jumping over five gruelling hours. As a team we will stick together through thick and thin, crossing each transition zone and the finish line as the deadly duo.

We are taking up this challenge on behalf of The Swaffham and Litcham Home Hospice. This is a small charity strongly supported by Olivia's family. They provide practical and emotional support to patients diagnosed with an incurable illness. The Home Hospice aims to maintain the dignity and independence of these patients throughout their illness and where possible allow them to continue to enjoy their final months at home.

It can be pretty scary going for your first round of chemotherapy treatment. Especially if you live alone. It can also be difficult to get there if you don't drive. Simple activities like getting to the shops afterwards become a mammoth task. The nausea, the lethargy and the hair loss can contribute to a sense of isolation. When you're sick and lonely it can be quite easy to simply give up.

The Home Hospice is there for these patients. The volunteers provide a range of support, from a friendly driver who will take you to and around the hospital, through to councillors who can give you practical advice for future planning. Reflexology, social and crafts clubs give you the chance to meet others and chat through your experiences and worries and the hospice provides bereavement counselling for those left behind.

Providing a range of services including transport for chemotherapy, home visits to make sure the pets are fed, social clubs and practical advice can alleviate much of the fear and isolation people experience when they are given a terminal diagnosis.
